Basically everything is worn out on this mower deck. The spindle bearings are trashed, & the spindles themselves have enough issues to warrant full replacement. There are issues with the linkages as well, & the pulleys along with their bearings are in poor shape. This deck represents just about the worst shape mechanically as you can get before catastrophic failure, which is actually what has occurred. It's time to either throw it away or get to work rebuilding it. We chose to go with the latter.

Cleaning up the deck with a wire wheel on an angle grinder, & giving it a fresh coat of paint.

New spindles, rings, & pulleys

The rings that protect the spindles were torn up, so replacements were necessary.

All in all, it looks pretty good. The only real issues it has at this point is some pitting in the metal, but this is only cosmetic & has been protected from further deterioration by the new coat of paint.

The rebuild cost us less than $200usd. A new deck was over $600 to purchase & would have had to be shipped. Even a used deck ran around $400, so we did pretty good. It cuts just like new now & we hope to get another couple decades out of it (that's how old it was when it was rebuilt). All of the parts were readily available online.
