A very special, very old variety of collard greens. If collards aren’t a staple in your house they should be. Year after year collards have sustained households in the American South through the toughest of times. Boiled collards are extremely high in protein & just about every mineral you can think of. This variety is known to thrive in extreme heat as well as extremely cold conditions.
Collard seeds can be direct sown as long as the soil temperature is above 40 degrees Fahrenheit, but starting indoors has it’s advantages as well. Sprinkle seeds on top of soil & lightly press them in.
If seeds are direct sown, they will need to be thinned as they grow to a final in row spacing of eighteen inches.
To start indoors, plant one seed per cell in a cellular tray or in small pots (the size of a shot glass). Don’t bury them too deep. Lightly pressing seeds into soil is sufficient. Don’t let them dry out prior to germination.
If this is your first time to grow collards from seed, it might be wise to try both methods.
Seed Saving
Collards left in the ground long enough will bolt (produce seed heads) within a year. Allow the seed pods to dry on the plant, harvesting them before they burst open. Store seeds in a cool dark place for up to 3 years or more.
